High School rowers win places at the National Championships
May 15th 2006
Last Saturday at the North East
and Mid-Atlantic Championships held on Lake Mercer, Princeton,
NJ., GMS Juniors (High School) qualified for the National Championships
to be held at Cincinnati in June. Rowing conditions were difficult
with winds and rough water. The competition was tough with approximately
800 competitors from 50 clubs and schools.
Sam Gerow (Junior at New Milford
HS) and Mike Orzolek (Senior at New Milford HS) came 1st &
2nd in the single sculls (1x)
Adam Kobayashi (Junior at Canterbury);
Matt Holden (Junior at Canterbury); Mike Orzolek (Senior at New
Milford HS) and Sam Gerow (Junior at New Milford HS) came 3rd
in a quadruple scull. Given that this was a relatively new combination
their achievement says a great deal about their commitment and
talent.
Previous to last weekend
Championships GMS rowers had success at the Coopers Cup, Regatta
at Camden, NJ and NSR III at Lake Waramaug where Rebecca Leaden
and Kayla Trnka won a gold in a double (2x) and Mike Orzolek won
a gold in a single (1x).
