Success at US Rowing Junior National Team Trials
July 1, 2008
Four rowers training from the GMS
Rowing Center in New Milford, Connecticut raced to first place
during last week’s National Team Trials to qualify for the
JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS to be held in Ottensheim, Austria from
20th – 27th July 2008.
The following rowers earned National Team berths and will represent
the US at the Junior World’s:
- Kynan Reelick, Brookfield CT – Junior
Men’s Single Scull
- Mairi McKellop, Ridgefield CT & Emily
Eiffert, Rochester NY—Junior Women’s Double Scull
- Kelsey Reelick from Brookfield CT –
Junior Women’s Quadruple Scull
Training and competing at this
level has its price. Since the US teams are non-funded (unlike
the government funded teams in Europe and the rest of the world)
there is a huge financial burden on the athletes and their families.
Each athlete’s expenses to cover travel, transportation,
competition, and boat rental in Europe, are approximately $4500.
GMS Rowing Center is accepting
donations to support these Junior National team athletes with
fundraising along with the assistance of OARS, a fund raising
and support organization headquartered in Westport CT at the Saugatuck
Rowing Club. Donations made to these athletes through OARS will
be tax deductible and will be used solely to fund the trip to
Worlds. Donations in any amount are welcome--no amount is too
small to make a difference and to invest in the future of America’s
promising young athletes.

The rowers are looking forward
to competing on the world stage of rowing and they are facing,
along with their coach, Guenter Beutter, Wilton CT, three weeks
of very hard work. Coach Beutter, co-founder of GMS Rowing Center,
is looking forward to these exciting three weeks of training and
preparation. “We are going to Europe to compete with the
best and strongest athletes in the world. This is very exciting
and challenging. We are hoping to represent the USA respectably
and to bring home some ‘hardware’! [medals].
