Summer
Season
Dates – Monday
June 2nd to Friday August 8th. (An Extension Course will run from
Aug 11th to Aug 29th.
Structure – Each
participant will be evaluated at the beginning of the Summer Season
and assigned to their level / ability. The three levels are: Development,
Competitive and Elite.
- Development:
This program caters for those students in the learn-to-row category
and includes the Cadet program.
- Competitive: This
program caters for those with previous rowing experience and students
will be competing at regattas. Sessions are Mondays to Fridays
at 3:30pm – 5:30pm
- Elite: This
program is for High School and College students. Those attending
have to achieve a level of criteria set by Guenter Beutter, Technical
Director. This group will be selected on ergometer scores and
race results. Sessions will be held in the mornings from 8am to
10:00am
Content (Competitive
and Development) – The program will focus on teaching new
rowers the basics of the rowing stroke, proper care and use of the
equipment, and preparation for competition. We will introduce students
to “sweep” rowing (a technique where each athlete uses
one oar). They will learn to row in fours (rowing shells with seats
for four rowers plus a coxswain) and eights (rowing shells with
seats for eight rowers plus a coxswain). During the season they
will have some exposure to “sculling” (a technique where
each athlete uses two smaller oars, one in each hand). Rowers will
be divided into two groups – Competitive and Novice.
Racing – As rowers
progress and develop, GMS will enter them in local regattas and
regional championship events. Potential race sites vary. Entries
will be based on the skill level attained by the athlete; GMS coaching
staff will enter crews in races including the Independence Day regatta
at Philadelphis, and Club Nationals, Camden NJ. Additionally we
will organize scrimmages with other CT rowing clubs such so that
GMS Rowing Center athletes can measure their progress with other
programs.
Daily Schedule –
Sessions
- Development and Competitive will be held
daily Monday through Friday. Workouts start at 3:30 running until
5:30 daily.
- Elite / College and U-23 will be held daily
Monday though Friday. Workouts start at 8am running through to
10:00am daily.
Costs – The cost
for the 5-day a week program is $750 per person for returning students
or $850 for new students. The three day course a week course is
$450 per person for a returning student and $500 for
a new student.

Fall
Season
Dates – This
year's Fall program will start on Monday, September 8th and conclude
on Friday,
November 7th.
Content –
- The Development
group: Refer to Cadet Fall Program.
- The Competitive
group: All rowers at
this level must meet fitness standards including ergometer (erg)
scores set by their coach and must achieve a necessary level of
skill in sweep rowing. The opportunity to scull will also be taught
enabling rowers to further develop their skills and to broaden
their options particularly if they become eligible to move into
the Elite level. Attendance at all practices and participation
in designated regattas is required.
Experienced students will prepare for the fall “Head of
the River” racing season in which contestants compete, one
after another single file over a measured, 3-mile course. Rowers
will again be divided into appropriate groups and assigned to
boat types based ability and numbers.
- The Elite group
will comprise of those who have achieved a level of criteria set
by Guenter Beutter, Technical Director. All selected rowers will
need to meet minimum fitness standards which will include erg
scores. Rowers need to ensure that other non-academic commitments
do not restrict their commitment to training and competitions.
The Head of the Charles is the prestigious event for which entry
will be sort as well as other highly competitive Head of the River
regattas.
Racing – Novice
crews will likely get their first taste of racing by participating
in the GMS Regatta & Sprint, The Riverfront Recapture race in
Hartford, CT as well as the “Head of the Housatonic”
in Shelton, CT. More experienced crews may additionally participate
at the “Head of the Schuylkill” in Philadelphia, PA
or Head of the Fish, NY, and possibly the most famous of all fall
races, the “Head of the Charles” in Boston, MA. Please

the entire fall race schedule.
Daily Schedule –
Workouts will start at 3:30 running
until 5:30 daily.

Winter
Season
Importance of Winter Training:
Rowing in the Northeast stops in November and does not resume
until April. We then begin the on-water build up to the Sprint Season
culminating in Regional, National and International regattas. Without
a Winter Program rowers will not be in a physical condition to perform
to their best capability and are highly unlikely to achieve the
results necessary to win scholarships or be selected to colleges
they would like.
Dates – This
year's Winter program will start on Monday, November 17th 2008 and
conclude on Friday March 6th 2009.
Content –
- The Development
group: Refer to Cadet Fall Program.
- The Competitive
& Elite groups:
Our Winter Training program is designed to build strength and
endurance using a mixture of ergometer (rowing machine) work-outs
and weights. GMS uses techniques and a science-based methodology
developed initially in Germany and now used in many of the leading
sports academies across the World. (For those interested the book
Rowing Faster by Volker Nolte describes the many attributes of
this scientific approach).
Each attendee will be expected to complete a 2000 meter test
on the ergometer. From this benchmark, individual performance
targets can be set for the winter. In addition to the 2,000
meter test each rower will be given a free Lactate Acid Test
(refer to Lactate Test side bar) which measures aerobic and
anaerobic fitness levels. Lactate test results establish heart-rate
ranges for each rower, which are used to guide the athletes
as they train at varying levels of intensity. Participants in
our program can expect marked improvement in aerobic capacity
and endurance.
Racing:
The ‘regattas’ for indoor training
are:
- The Crash-B Championships held in Boston
on Sunday, February 24th 2008 (the premier indoor championship
attracting over 2000 athletes). College coaches expect applicants
to have entered this event.
- Connecticut Indoor Championships –
this is planned for late January and is very much a Junior and
College focused event.
Daily Schedule –
Workouts will start at 3:30 running
until 5:30 daily.
Cost – The
cost for the 5-day a week program is $850 per person ($750 for a
returning member).

Spring
Season
Dates: Spring
season 2008 will start on Monday March 17th and end on Friday, May
30th. (No rowing will take place over the holiday week of April
16th to April 20th when a Junior Elite Camp will take place. Places
will be available for Elite rowers).
Structure – Each
participant will be evaluated at the beginning of the Spring Season
and assigned to their level / ability. The three levels are: Development,
Competitive and Elite.
Content –
- The Development group
will focus on teaching new rowers the basics of the rowing stroke,
proper care and use of the equipment, and preparation for competition.

each hand).
- The Competitive
group will be divided into appropriate groups and boats
dependant on numbers and ability. This group will be entering
competitions with the focus on developing technique and fitness.
The better rowers will be regularly assessed and evaluated for
moving into the Elite group.
- The Elite group
will comprise of those who have achieved a level of criteria set
by Guenter Beutter, Technical Director; this includes reaching
nationally recognized erg scores. This group will compete at regional
and national championships. They are likely to concentrate on
smaller boats but this will be determined by their coach.
Racing – As rowers
progress and develop, GMS will enter local regattas and regional
championship events. Potential race sites vary from spring to spring.
Based on the skill level attained by the athlete, GMS coaching staff
will enter crews in races ranging from the Cooper Cup in Camden
NJ (early May) to the Northeast Junior Regional Championships at
Worcester, MA (typically held in mid-May). Winners of their events
at Northeast Regional are invited to US Junior National Championships
in Cincinnati in early June. Additionally we will organize scrimmages
with other CT rowing clubs so that GMS Rowing Center athletes can
measure their progress with other programs. (Please refer to Race
Schedule side bar for the regatta schedule).
